I'd add: Really try to think about what your character would do – improvise and be imaginative, don't just do what you think the DM wants you to do. Try to make bargains with NPCs, use any unusual spells you have, search bookshelves for rare books etc.

@seravorn @exploding_girl @bigfootfrom2003 @houseofgunn Even if you're way off, a good DM will reward your creativity and either introduce a new plot element, or maybe invent an item for you to discover. Or they'll give you an Inspiration point which is just as good!

@seravorn @exploding_girl @bigfootfrom2003 @houseofgunn One pet peeve (as a DM) to avoid though: don't say "I make a Perception check to see what's in the cave" or whatever (the DM will tell you what to roll!), say "I look around to see if there's anything in the cave" – avoids breaking the fourth wall (and allows the DM some flex).
