Another bad take on the Strava heatmap scandal: newstatesman.com/science-tech/2018/01/fitness-app-strava-breached-us-security-it-s-time-consider-dangers-data – it's not a "security flaw". People in the military literally asked the app to record their precise movements, then pressed a button to upload them to the web, publicly.

Strava excluded any activity marked "private" from the map and they fuzz the location of your home/work if you enable it. This isn't a story of some shifty tech startup stealing your data. The entire point of the app is public leaderboards and routes to use.

The article does suggest that army personnel need some education, but also says Strava is "placing the onus on the exercising soldiers, rather than on its own technology". Well, yes? Do users have no responsibility at all?
