        1. Heard a bloke in the pub tonight mansplaining to the woman he was with about how great the Beatles were and if they'd continued for another 5 years then nobody would be talking about any other band and Twitter it took every fibre of my being not to interrupt him to disagree

Like... the Beatles were barely together for a decade and in that limited period they reinvented popular music multiple times (let alone their own "sound"). By the end of the 60s they had pushed this to its limits and were unable to continue.

If they'd somehow forced another five years it would've been more like Abbey Road, eg. the sound of four estranged individuals chafing against one another. The outpouring of solo material from 1970 onwards shows how trapped they all felt at the end of the Beatles.

Even if they somehow churned out another half decade, what would they have become? Like the Rolling Stones, dining out on a run of a few classic records for five decades? The whole point of the Beatles is that they came, they saw, they conquered - then it was over.

If you want the Beatles to have carried on after 1970 then you fundamentally don't understand the Beatles

Anyway I pretended I couldn't hear this bloke and just ate my pork scratchings in silence.
