    1. I've been reading the Letters of JRR Tolkien and discovered that in 1956 an actual "Sam Gamgee" wrote to Tolkien about their shared name.     There's some quite adorable shade in the italics of "I do not suppose you could be bothered to *read* so long and fantastic a work". Tolkien also manages here to avoid grumbling that library copies don't make him any money (a feature of many other letters he sent to fans).
