@HPS_Vanessa Fair! One more rec: by a man, but with female protagonists. Pushing Ice by Alastair Reynolds - read it a few years ago after reading Contact (and Fermi's paradox) and chewing up books about extraterrestrial life. Good structure as the scale of the narrative grows and grows.
